Support agent hiring cost calculator: true cost of one more hire
A support hire costs more than their salary. Add benefits, tools, recruiting and the slow first months to see what one more agent really costs, and what each ticket costs in year one.

The salary is rarely more than three quarters of what a hire costs. Before you add a seat, check whether a help center, saved replies or AI drafts could absorb some of the volume first.
Questions
How much does it cost to hire a support agent?
More than the salary. Add benefits and payroll taxes (often 20 to 30% of pay), tools and equipment, and the one-off cost of recruiting. A $55,000 agent commonly costs $75,000 or more in the first year.
What is ramp time and why does it matter?
A new agent needs weeks to learn the product and your tone, and closes fewer tickets until then. The calculator counts those months at reduced productivity, so the first-year cost per ticket is higher than the steady-state one.
How many tickets can one agent close in a month?
It depends on how hard the tickets are. Email agents on simple questions often close 400 to 600 a month; technical products land lower. Use your own last quarter's numbers when you have them.
When is it better to add automation than a hire?
If repeat questions are a large share of volume, a help center, saved replies and AI drafts can free up agent time first. Hire when agents are busy on questions that need judgment.
Does the help desk price change with each hire?
With per-seat tools it does, and the seat cost is part of the monthly tools figure. A flat-price help desk keeps that line from growing as the team does.
