Questions
How do I calculate support cost per customer?
Divide your total monthly support cost by your active customers. $8,000 across 500 customers is $16 per customer per month.
What should be included in support cost?
Support salaries and benefits, your help desk and AI fees, and any tools the team uses. Leave out engineering time spent on bugs unless you track it as support work.
How is it different from cost per ticket?
Cost per ticket tells you how efficient each reply is. Cost per customer tells you how much support your customer base needs overall, which is what matters for pricing and margin.
What is a healthy share of revenue?
For most software products, support under 10% of revenue is comfortable and over 15% deserves a look. The right number depends on price and how complex the product is.
How do I bring it down?
Fewer tickets per customer is the biggest lever: a help center, clearer onboarding and saved replies for repeat questions. A flat-price help desk also stops the tool cost growing with your team.
