Paste a help article and run five structure checks: title, length, paragraph size, numbered steps and headings.

  • Pass · Title is 70 characters or fewer
  • Pass · Body is between 50 and 700 words
  • Pass · No paragraph is over 80 words
  • Pass · Has numbered steps (for how-to articles)
  • Pass · Headings, if any, say what the section holds

The steps check suits how-to articles. A reference or policy article can pass without it.

Questions

What does the checker look at?

The title length, the body length, the longest paragraph, whether there are numbered steps and whether headings say what the section holds.

How long should a help article be?

Most are between 50 and 700 words. Shorter than that usually leaves gaps, and longer is often two articles in one.

Why check for numbered steps?

How-to articles are easier to follow as numbered steps with one action each. Reference and policy articles may not need them.

Which headings count as vague?

Headings that start with words such as About, Overview, Introduction, General or Other. A heading that names the task or the question is more useful.

Is my article stored anywhere?

No. The check runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
