Offer a pause instead of a cancellation

Some customers cancel because they need a break, not because they dislike the product. A pause lets them step away and return without starting over. Offered at the right moment and without pressure, it keeps people who would otherwise be lost.

Know who a pause helps

It suits seasonal use, a busy stretch, a tight month or a trip. It does not help a customer who is unhappy with the product. Ask why they are leaving before you mention it.

Offer it once, plainly

Say that a pause exists, how long it can last and what happens to their data and price when it ends. Then accept their answer. Repeating the offer feels like a roadblock.

Be exact about the terms

State whether billing stops, whether they keep access, whether the price can change and what date the subscription restarts. Vague terms cause refund requests later.

Make it easy to leave anyway

If they still want to cancel, do it. Never make a pause the only route out. A customer who feels trapped will not come back.

Remind them before it ends

Send a short note a few days before the pause finishes with the date, the amount and how to cancel. Surprise charges create chargebacks.

Track what happens

Count how many pauses turn into returns and how many into cancellations. If few return, the offer is delaying a decision, not changing it.

Questions

Should a pause be free?

Often yes, because the customer is not using the service. Decide based on your costs and say clearly what they keep. Check how your payment provider handles paused subscriptions.

How long should a pause last?

One to three months is common. Long enough to be useful and short enough that the customer remembers you.

Is a pause better than a discount?

They solve different problems. A pause fits a customer who cannot use the product now. A discount fits a customer who thinks it costs too much.
